about
London quintet pencil share brand new single "The Giant", out now on Moshi Moshi. This single marks the relaunch of Moshi Moshi Singles Club.
It took a year of experimentation to craft pencil’s self professed "dusty" sound, during which time the band’s influences were amassed via a mammoth 10 hour playlist. Instead of the heavier sounds that the band first pondered, it was the likes of Yo La Tengo, XTC and Pinback that came to the fore.
The band say, "The Giant’ is a song about the pain of growth - growing up, growing apart, growing old. It started life with Coco’s violin. The whirlpool arpeggio immediately caught our ears and we started figuring out a chord sequence for the verse together. The idea sat as a voice memo for a few days before one rare morning, when all the lyrics were written in one sitting. We then arranged the song as a band before recording it live with Polly Mackey aka Artschool Girlfriend at Goldsmiths University.”
